USF Health’s Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) is dedicated to making life better by improving patient safety and health care quality through the use of simulation. This 90,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility integrates three floors of innovative simulation experience with education and research excellence to push the latest advances in health care into practice.
The building’s form and major gestures were driven by semantic and figural abstractions of the human body. The porous metallic shading screen spanning the glazed facades act as an epidermis – protecting the interior atrium from the Florida sun’s rays and at night, assuming a far more captivating role. Expression of functional joints and interior volumes is achieved by allowing the program space to pierce the mesh façade and is augmented by transparency, layering, and motifs of abstracted DNA throughout the project. Finally, the project exhibits various levels of response to the pedestrian corridor of Franklin Street, the urbanity of downtown, and the complex programmatic requirements.
CAMLS is designed to replicate a real-world health care environment, complete with surgical skills suites and training laboratories, and will service multidisciplinary audiences of medical professionals, experts, and students. The project’s featured program will transform the training of healthcare with simulation-based education. The Center will also focus on designing and testing new medical devices and technologies in the Research and Innovation Lab. This project is not only a critical part of revolutionizing the learning, practice, and perfection of advanced medical skills, it also provides a place where people, technology, and learning converge to shape tomorrow’s healthcare.
